Jerry Seeman 1936-2013

Ed. note — Jerry Seeman, the former head of the NFL officiating department who ushered the league into the current replay era, passed away on Nov. 24 at the age of 77. Jerry was also a referee, head linesman, and line judge in his career — and by career, we mean the countless intramural basketball and high school football games which counted as much as two Super Bowls.

His cousin, Bob Nesbit, told the Rochester, Minn., Post-Bulletin about Jerry’s early officiating career. “In the late ’40s and early ’50s, most students who lived in the rural areas rode the bus to and from school and had no other way to get home after school, which meant they couldn’t participate in varsity sports. So these rural kids played intramural basketball during their noon lunch break. My second cousin and great friend, Jerry Seeman, volunteered to referee those games, and his officiating career began.”

Amy Seeman, who is married to Jerry’s first grandson, collected a group of tweets, stories, and articles on Storify. With her permission, we share her curated work here.
