Throwback: Feature on Gene Barth’s 1980s NFL officiating crew

A nice feature on a NFL officiating crew.

Let’s throw it back to (I think) 1986, when the NFL did a nice feature on the officials. In this feature was referee Gene Barth, and his entire crew. On the crew that year were umpire Ed Fiffick, head linesman Frank Glover, line judge Ray Dodez, back judge Paul Baetz, side judge (and future referee) Gerald Austin, and field judge Ed Merrifield. The back judge and field judge names were swapped in the late 1990s.

The feature shows how the crew prepares for a game each week, and each crew member goes over their position and duties.

This footage is courtesy of the Ray Dodez family.

As a Gen X man, I refuse to believe this feature is 40 years old.

Enjoy a trip down memory lane!
