Football Zebras has obtained the officiating crew rosters for the 2018 NFL season. This season, there are seven new officials to replace officials that retired. There are two veteran officials designated as swing officials, decreasing last season’s record-level bench. The swing officials will move between crews through the season, and include one line-of-scrimmage official and one deep wing.

There are four new “white hats” this season: Shawn Hochuli, Alex Kemp, Shawn Smith, and Clay Martin. They were promoted following the retirement of referees Ed Hochuli, Terry McAulay, Gene Steratore, and Jeff Triplette. Shawn Hochuli is the son of Ed, and Kemp is the son of late referee Stan Kemp. Usually a first-year referee will inherit a number of officials from a retiree’s crew, giving some pattern of succession; this is not the case this year as all four have mixed crews.

In the past 5 seasons, the NFL has promoted 8 officials to the referee position. This is the first time since the 1960 inaugural American Football League season there were this many officials in their first year at the referee position.

Senior staff

  • Al Riveron, senior vice president of officiating, centralized replay representative
  • Wayne Mackie, vice president of officiating evaluation and development, centralized replay representative
  • Russell Yurk, vice president of instant replay and administration, centralized replay representative
  • Garth DeFelice, regional supervisor of officials
  • Bill Leavy, regional supervisor of officials
  • Doug Rosenbaum, regional supervisor of officials
  • Gary Slaughter, regional supervisor of officials
  • Rob Vernatchi, regional supervisor of officials

Crews

Crew members are listed with their years of NFL experience, including the upcoming season, the crews they were on last season, the college attended, and occupations. A replay official is assigned to each crew, and the replay assistant position is now crew-based once again, after having it locally assigned the past 2 seasons

*indicates an official who is on the same crew as last season. indicates a full-time official, who may also have outside employment. Veteran officials who have changed positions from last season are noted on each crew.

8 thoughts on “Officiating crews for the 2018 season

  1. Is it unusual for a new referee to get a rookie. At least the past 5 years I do not recap a first year white hat getting a rookie official like Shawn hochuli

  2. How can a person stop in mid air nfl committee never played football that changed two games for Green Bay . Maybe they should add QB can not leave the pocket when defense is close blow the whistle and that is a sack and make the game more of a travisity then what it is right now . Or have a review to see if it is illegal or not

  3. Although many NFL fans cuss and berate game officials weekly, in many cases I believe the replay officials should be the ones we are upset with. In watching many games this weekend, I cannot comprehend the findings these officials come up with. In the Cleveland/Oakland games the fumble that wasn’t a fumble by Oakland and the Carlos Hyde first down-no first down were both reviewed and clearly showed, even agreed to by the Network retired Referees, both were called against the Browns. These calls clearly defined the outcome of the game. I have been a true NFL fan for well over 50 years and find the games, at times, hard to watch now. I understand the players today are much faster and stronger and this has to make it harder for the referees, but the officials are beginning to determine the outcome of the games. That’s when I decide to simply not watch the NFL anymore. From this point forward it appears I will have a lot more time on Sundays to do other things!
