Steelers low-block call is outside of the tight end box

Published

on

While it is mostly called on the offense, it is also illegal for the defense to block below the waist outside the tight end box. This is typically a tactic where the defender takes out the lead blocker with a block below the waist, allowing another defender to make the play.

Referee Bill Vinovich was momentarily confused and announced the wrong team. He quickly corrected himself.

Field judge Aaron Santi or back judge Todd Prukop made this outstanding call.

It wasn’t a block below the waist to take out the lead blocker. Did you watch the play? He was clearly trying to make the tackle and dove AROUND the knees of the lead blocker. Horrible call

It was a terrible call. As mentioned above, and talked about in game, he dove past the blocker to a runner immediately behind, and did it very well. As safely as that play could be made. I understand the rule and I don’t disagree with it but plays like this need a bit of common sense applied. (Leeway on holds that don’t impact the play come to mind). I suspect there wouldn’t be a downgrade if not called and if there was could be appealed successfully. A tough call. A tricky call. No doubt. Outstanding call? Sorry guys, I love this site and your explanations…second to none. But didn’t like the call , and outstanding was too strong.

How do you know this was an “outstanding call” without seeing the grades for this game? I heard one analyst disagree with call entirely.
