We are covering the Sugar Bowl playoff semifinal between Clemson and Alabama in a rematch of last year’s championship game. Today’s crew is from the Pac-12.
Land Clark has spent the past 2 seasons in the NFL’s development program as a field judge and side judge.
One additional crew note: Matt Dornan is the son of retired NFL back judge Kirk Dornan.
Great job of communicating between back judge Joe Johnston and field judge Kevin Kiser. Johnston had a better angle to see a tug of a shoulder that Kiser was straight-lined and couldn’t see. In some cases, the primary official chooses not to throw a flag for a reason, and can provide that information to the calling official. In this case, Johnston explained the situation to Kiser, who presumedly gave Johnston the blessing to report the foul to referee Land Clark.
This call stands, as is the case with most spots, unless the spot is obviously egregious, or if there is a clear landmark on the field such as a hashmark that can be used to move the spot. In that mush, it would have been hard to conclusively change anything.
