The NFL has announced that Terry McAulay will be the referee for Super Bowl XLVIII on Feb. 2.

This will be McAulay’s third Super Bowl ring in his 16th NFL season. McAulay previously worked Super Bowls XXXIX (Patriots-Eagles, 2004 season) and XLIII (Steelers-Cardinals, 2008), both as a referee. McAulay was a conference championship game referee last season, which means he has graded at or near the top in consecutive seasons.

Jerry Markbreit is the only referee to work four Super Bowls at the referee position. McAulay’s three Super Bowls ties him with Jim Tunney, Pat Haggerty, Bob McElwee, and Norm Schachter.

Carl Paganelli is the umpire, and this will be in his fourth Super Bowl. He worked the conference championship game with McAulay last year, and he worked another Super Bowl two years earlier. The assignment rules prohibit an official from working consecutive Super Bowls.

Scott Steenson is the field judge with one prior Super Bowl.

All the crew members worked on the four divisional playoff crews last weekend.
