Alliance of American Football: Week 8, 2019

With only a few weeks to go before the Alliance of American Football postseason beings, Reggie Smith, Brandon Cruse, Jeff Heaser, and Tra Blake will be the referees in the eighth week of the regular season.

Follow our live coverage here this weekend during the games, and on our Twitter page, @footballzebras.

Game assignments are below. All times are Eastern. TV networks are in a rounded box, streaming providers in a dashed box. The game between Orlando and Memphis will only be broadcast on Bleacher Report’s live stream.

Inside 2 minute rules discussion

In the Orlando at Memphis game, referee Reggie Smith led his crew in a discussion of the AAF rules inside two minutes to go in the first half.

The video was a little choppy (and also not sure why it says “Snow White and the Huntsman”), so I cut in the portion with the good audio. Reggie is mic’d up for the broadcast and gives a good overview of the rules inside two minutes and the scenarios that the crew should be watching for.

Illegal defense

The sky judge in the Orlando at Memphis game threw a penalty flag for illegal defense when they ruled that the Memphis defense rushed with the maximum allowed five-man rush but four of the rushers came from the center over to the left tackle.

The call was perplexing and I don’t think it was the right call because the rules state that the defense is allowed to rush with four defenders from one side of the ball at the snap.
