Coach Ron Rivera appointed to the Competition Committee

Washington head coach Ron Rivera has recently been appointed to the NFL’s Competition Committee. This will be the first time since 2017 that the Competition Committee will have at least three head coaches. The Committee began their first meetings of the 2020 offseason this week. ESPN rules analyst and former referee John Parry first confirmed the news.

Rivera was previously on the Coaches Subcommittee of the Competition Committee. There are now 9 members on the Committee, who are all chosen by commissioner Roger Goodell and headed by chairman Rich McKay, president of the Atlanta Falcons.

  • John Mara,  Giants owner  
  • Stephen Jones, Cowboys owner  
  • Mark Murphy,  Packers president  
  • Ozzie Newsome, Ravens executive vice president
  • Sean Payton, Saints head coach
  • Mike Tomlin, Steelers head coach  
  • John Elway, Broncos general manager

The Competition Committee meets annually and reviews rules proposals that are submitted to all 32 teams before the NFL Scouting Combine. To adopt a new rule or revision, the support of 75% of the owners (24 yes votes from 32 teams) is required.
