NFL granted request

Former NFL referee Mike Carey, who retired before the start of this season to be an officiating analyst for CBS Sports, asked the NFL to not assign him any games featuring the Washington Redskins, becausewpid-wp-1403646852782.jpeg the official found the team’s nickname offensive.

Carey’s last Redskins’ game was in 2006.  According to The Washington Post report, Carey commented, “It just became clear to me that to be in the middle of the field, where something disrespectful is happening, was probably not the best thing for me.  Human beings take social stances.  And if you’re respectful of all human beings, you have to decide what you’re going to do and why you’re going to do it.”

The report quotes Carey as saying he requested that the league’s officiating office not assign him Washington games, and he requested that the matter be kept private while he was still an active official.  He further stated that he did not know if Commissioner Roger Goodell was made aware of his request.
