A suggestion from an 11-year old boy will be evident on the field this week for the Miami Dolphins – New York Jets game.  The officiating crew will use pink penalty flags for breast cancer awareness month.

Dante Cano, from Marlboro, New Jersey, wrote commissioner Roger Goodell suggesting the special flags.  Goodell liked Cano’s idea so we’ll be seeing the pink flags on Sunday.  To our knowledge, the flags will be used only for this one game.

Cano and his family will present the pink penalty flags to the officiating crew before the start of the game.

Mark Schultz is a high school football official, freelance writer and journalist. He first became interested in officiating when he was six years old, was watching a NFL game with his father and asked the fateful question, "Dad, what are those guys in the striped shirts doing?"
