In the Peach Bowl liveblog I noted that the SEC umpire did not step toward the line of scrimmage on pass plays, instead, staying put 10-yards in the defensive backfield. Well, ACC umpire Jim Hyson is stepping toward the line of scrimmage at the Rose Bowl.

Also of note, Hyson is blowing his whistle at the end of plays, something that several conferences have discouraged umpires from doing in the past. The reason behind that is that the wing officials have a better angle to see when the knee is down.

This ACC crew had better get their running shoes on today. Looks like a shootout.

12:30 | 2nd qtr. Nice work by the head linesman, side judge and referee to wade into the Georgia sideline after a play goes crashing out of bounds. When a player or players wind up on the “enemy” sideline, the officials work hard to get them out of the bench area without any unsportsmanlike conduct or physical altercation.

Rose Bowl record longest field goal

The pass from receiver CeeDee Lamb is legal at all levels of football, except for the NFL. Quarterback Baker Mayfield was under center, and in the NFL, this makes the quarterback an ineligible receiver. The NFL quarterback can gain eligibility if he shifts to a shotgun formation or another eligible position (and the offense must be set for 1 second after such a shift to establish him eligible). Completely legal in college, but the NFL rule came about in the 1950s, according to our partner site Quirky Research.

In college, a player can be in the endzone while downing a punt. As long as the ball stays out of the endzone, it is no touchback.

On the extra-point, it is possible for the kicker to be flagged for illegal motion because of his studder-step before the snap. For the foul, officials are looking for forward movement towards the line, and the kicker steps slightly to the side which is enough to hold the flag in this case.

On the drive, there was a clock error. The clock did not run during a third-down play. The first-down line was gained, and the clock ran after the ready-for-play signal.

OU possession | Overtime 2. There is a question about a potential leverage call on the blocked field goal. It is a foul if a rusher pushes down on an teammate in order to gain height to block a kick. In this case, the contact was against an opponent, which is legal.

In the NFL, a player would be called for leverage if he pushes a teammate or opponent. Even at that, this contact is deemed incidental: the defensive player is already leaping and touches the back of a lineman. It’s not a maneuver to gain additional height, and the contact is legal.
