6:33 | 3rd qtr. Jadeveon Clowney tackled Tom Brady after he releases the pass, and no flag was thrown. Clowney did not hit high or low, so there is no foul there. A quarterback that is stationary and just released a pass can’t be legally hit if the defender takes 2 steps prior to the hit. A scrambling quarterback doesn’t get the 1-step rule, because a pursuing defender can’t stop that fast. Clowney was able to follow through on his tackle, and, absent some other unnecessary roughness (planting the quarterback, etc.), there is no foul.

2:20 | 3rd qtr. Booth review (turnover) — Brock Osweiler fumbled forward. Call reversed: incomplete pass, maintained control of the ball. Illegal substitution flag on NE is picked up. key

Texans QB Brock Osweiler appeared to fumble the football with a recovery and TD by the Patriots. There was also a flag for illegal substitution on the defense as it appeared some players came out for what they thought was an incomplete pass but it was during the run back. Fumble was reviewed and officials determined it was an incomplete pass as his hand was going forward. This negated the penalty on the Patriots for illegal substitution.

11:29 | 2nd qtr. The Texans recover the Patriots’ fumble on the kickoff. Pete Morelli signals the wrong way on possession. Every official has signaled the wrong way at some point, but this is a pretty cut and dried play. The key is concentration and slowing down before signaling. If the official gets turned around and is unsure which way to point (usually at the bottom of a pile), they should yell who has the ball and another official signals possession.

7:22 | 1st qtr. Good call for unnecessary roughness on the Patriots’ Eric Rowe. When there is a scrum of players going for the ball, players are prohibited from pulling other players off the pile.

Umpire Shawn Smith, in his first playoff game, may have a challenge tonight as the Patriots love to no huddle and quick snap. But, they can’t quick sub and quick snap. If the Patriots bring in subs, look for referee Pete Morelli to order Smith to stand over the ball until the Texans have enough time to sub in.

Pete Morelli is in his 20th season and 15th as referee. This is Morelli’s 16th postseason assignment, including 7 Wild Card Playoffs, 6 Divisional Playoffs, 2 Conference Championships, and Super Bowl XXXVI. His Super Bowl assignment was as a field judge.
