Father-son team cover deep in preseason

Back judge Steve Freeman got a rare opportunity on Friday night, and even though it was a meaningless, forgettable preseason game, it is likely an experience he will remember as a highlight of his career.

Freeman’s son Brad, a field judge in the Southeastern Conference, has been actively scouted by the NFL for a potential callup. Brad was placed on the NFL’s developmental practice squad — their term, advanced training program — which is in its first season.

To give these advanced training program participants some practical experience, they are being inserted into regular crews this week. The Freemans got a chance to work together in Friday’s Buccaneers-Patriots game. On the opening drive of the game, the two collaborated on a tight sideline call on a two-point conversion attempt, pictured here. (Steve is number 133.)

We are working to confirm, but the Sunday night game between the Colts and Giants will likely have referee Ed Hochuli working with his son, Shawn.
